The Bruhan Maharashtra Mandal of North America organized a two day BMM 2020 summit on Oct.13 and 14, 2007 in Philadelphia. BMM invited Sunanda Tumne, Dr. Vijaya Bapat and Asmita Joshi to discuss the Marathi Language Learning program on a national level. Sunanda conducted the session with her 20 years’ experience of Marathi teaching at Toronto Board of Education in Canada. She presented a successful program outline with the need to teach Marathi for younger generation Dr. Vijaya Bapat presented strong input why North American children should know Marathi with her success of Marathi School for 15 years in Cary, NC. The BMM committee unanimously welcomed the project and initiated the pilot program with 7 Mandals. Sunanda Tumne spearheaded the project of "Baal Vihar".
Dr. Vijaya Bapat, Sunanda Tumne and team of other teachers contributed, developed and produced three levels BMM Marathi Learning curriculum in 2009. The project name was instigated as to "BMM Marathi Shala".
Leena Deodhare, BMM secretary served as a liaison person to coordinate the affiliation groundwork between BMM and Bharati Vidyapeeth in Pune, Maharashtra. India. The Bharati Vidyapeeth validated and approved the BMM Shala curriculum. BMM and BV singed the joint MOU to support the project in April 2009.
The BMM Marathi Shala is organized by volunteer coordinators, teachers, and parents along with local Mandal. Generally Marathi classes are conducted on Saturday/Sunday with 2.5 hrs of instructional time.
